When it comes to building or maintaining your website, there are a lot of steps. No matter where you are in the process, your website will need a domain name so your visitors can find you easily.
Choosing a good registrar for your WordPress site can be overwhelming. There are many options and it can sometimes be hard to spot the differences. RED’s domain registrar recommendations are based on our experiences with many companies on behalf of our clients since 2001.
Qualities We Look For:
Most domains should cost around $15-$30 per year, with the exception of premium domains. A premium domain might be one you’re purchasing from someone else, or a new top level domain.
- Ease of use
Each registrar provides a control panel to manage the domain and the records it points to. A simple and easy-to-use interface means fewer mistakes and less time spent on pointing the domain to the services/hosts you want to use.
- Built-in privacy registration
A high quality domain registrar will offer privacy registration at no additional fee. When you register a domain, you are required by law to provide real contact information. If you do not have privacy registration, anyone can look up your contact information through a WHOIS request. This may lead to scams, often in the form of phishing attempts. If privacy registration is turned on, the domain registrar adds their information to the public record, and keeps yours private to protect your contact information.
Sometimes issues or problems arise. Having reliable live chat or a phone number is a standard service we look for.
Recommended Domain Registrar
Right now, we like Hover. Why?
- Domain names are reasonably priced (usually around $15 for standard domains). They also don’t raise the price significantly for renewals. Unlike other registrars, they don’t charge an additional fee for privacy. Privacy registration is always included in the price.
- The control panel is very simple to use. It makes it easy to find what you are looking for.
- Support is helpful and available via live chat, email, or phone.
- Domain records update fast. This is helpful when you are making changes to new services, like website hosts or email providers.
Registrars we avoid
While we like GoDaddy’s easy interface for domain forwarding and DNS management, they have significantly higher prices, do not include privacy registration for free, and constantly try to sell you services you do not need.
Domains at Google are a bit cheaper than Hover and include domain privacy. However, we try to avoid Google services because they collect a lot of personal data from their users.
We have had issues with domain records not updating, and their support has not always been helpful.
- Register.com / Network Solutions
We find that the domain records take an extra long time to update here. Their control panels are also not easy to use.
- Website Hosts in general
Most website hosts will offer to include your domain registration. We do not recommend bundling domain registration with your hosting package, because if you need to move hosts one day, unbundling can be complicated.
